The C3E Poster Competition invites students and early-career researchers from all academic disciplines to participate and help shape the future of clean energy. Organizers of the 13th C3E Symposium and Awards are delighted to offer all young scholars an opportunity to showcase their work and experience in research, service, and/or education related to the clean energy system.

Five poster winners will be announced at the 13th C3E Symposium and Awards on November 13, 2024 at Stanford. Each winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize. Learn more about past poster competitions.

The poster competition provides symposium attendees with a view of cutting-edge research in a variety of clean energy fields. A review committee with wide-ranging expertise will select the most compelling poster submissions for presentation at the symposium with an eye toward diversity of topic, discipline and institution. The posters will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Effectiveness of the applicant's communication to multidisciplinary audiences (government, academics, corporate executives, etc.);

  • Professionalism and enthusiasm displayed during the one-minute video poster presentations;

  • Clarity of materials, specifically:

    • Motivation for studying this topic

    • Research methods

    • Results and/or conclusions

    • Potential impact of research results and/or conclusions

Posters must be created as one-sided A1 (24” by 36”) horizontal and be printed by the applicant.

Requirements

The poster presenter must be a female-identifying undergraduate, graduate student, or postdoctoral researcher currently undertaking the research project presented. Two or more presenters per poster will not be considered.

The presentation topic must relate to clean energy in any of the following areas:

  • Basic Energy Science

  • Built Environment and Infrastructure

  • Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration

  • Climate and Environment

  • Developing World

  • Energy Climate Equity, Justice, and Ethics

  • Energy Climate Education

  • Energy Efficiency

  • Nuclear Fission and Fusion

  • Policy and Finance

  • Power Distribution and Energy Storage

  • Renewable Energy

  • Transportation

The research should be well underway with (at least) preliminary findings and must be original work.

Applicants who are informed that their posters have been approved for presentation must be able to attend the full symposium in-person at Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and present their work during lunch.

Process

  1. Record a one-minute video of yourself pitching your poster: Introduce yourself, tell us the title of your poster and where you work, and tell us why someone should come and view your poster. The one-minute video does not include the poster or any presentation slides. It is just a video of you talking about your work. Please upload the video to YouTube as unlisted or public. Be sure to dress professionally (no hoodies, t-shirts, tank tops; blazers encouraged).

  2. When preparing your poster, please use the C3E poster template. Please avoid using jargon and acronyms because C3E attendees come from a wide variety of disciplines and may have limited knowledge of your content area.

  3. Create your poster using this template. Go to File > Make a copy > Entire presentation (preferred) or File > Download > Microsoft PowerPoint to edit on your desktop. Copy the link to your poster in Google Drive or upload to another sharing service (e.g. Box, Dropbox, WeTransfer) and copy the link.

  4. Submit your poster. Files should be PDF format.

Dates

  • Sunday, August 18, 2024, 11:59 pm PT: Application period closes.

  • September 2, 2024: Applicants will be notified if they are selected to present their posters at the symposium.

  • November 12 and 13, 2024: Selected applicants attend the symposium and present their posters (presenters are expected to provide informal overviews to symposium attendees during breaks). Posters will be made publicly available online for two days before the symposium as well as during the symposium on the C3E website.
